This traditional Walsa (Wampu) was made by Bolivian boat building masters for the original inauguration of the Smithsonian NMAI. The museum has recently decided not to permanently accesion this beautiful boat and so a new home must be found for it.

Andean Textile Traditions In Contemporary Art And Beyond
Textile artist Aymar Ccopacatty combines traditional weaving techniques, Indigenous knowledge, and environmental activism in his large-scale installation pieces. During this talk, Aymar will discuss his work, his process, and why he uses only recycled plastic in his textiles. He will survey the decay in traditional textile techniques in the last twenty years and the reasons behind this. He will also cover the hidden language within traditional textiles, along with the profound misunderstanding of textile traditions by the West.
