︎Spun and knitted recycled plastic bags

This project was undertaken in Puno, Peru in the context of the 2010 presidential elections. The artist picked up large quantities of plastic bags, sorted by color and began knitting. Traditional Aymara culture only allows a proven community leader who has passed through lower ranking community rolls to wear the classic Andean ear flap hat. The piece has lived many different lives after being created, finally belonging to the permanent collection of the Museum of  International Folk Art, Santa Fe, NM.

Este proyecto se llevó a cabo en Puno, Perú, en el contexto de las elecciones presidenciales de 2010. La artista recogió grandes cantidades de bolsas de plástico, las clasificó por colores y comenzó a tejer. La cultura tradicional aymara sólo permite que un líder comunitario comprobado que haya pasado por roles comunitarios de menor rango use el clásico sombrero andino con orejeras. La pieza ha vivido muchas vidas diferentes después de su creación, perteneciendo finalmente a la colección permanente del Museo de Arte Popular Internacional, Santa Fe, Nuevo México.
