The performance had several goals, building off of my combined careers as contemporary artist and museum conservator, commenting on museology, and from an ancestral point of view. The work united Andean textile and bronze objects in the museum’s collection that once went together, either in ceremony or burial or both. These objects are now living separate lives in different areas of the museum’s storage facilities. Uniting these objects in metaphor, involves uniting them in ceremony, if only for the duration of the performance. The second goal was to highlight to the museum and participants, that these objects lead a life very different than they do now, they deserve reconsideration to be housed as a whole family.<img width="2048" height="1365" width_o="2048" height_o="1365" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/45546ccf2cc8bf53ac81782d07b6ebbe5c797cc81306d694c43cf0273bda8471/Plastic-Shaman_120123_13.jpg" data-mid="199619519" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/45546ccf2cc8bf53ac81782d07b6ebbe5c797cc81306d694c43cf0273bda8471/Plastic-Shaman_120123_13.jpg" /> The Plastic Shaman is a post-modern spiritual mediator, a trickster who the ancestors sent to carry Indigenous protocol and remind people of the abundance that was taken from the Andes to the world, all without permission. An ongoing manifesto listing the ancient donations towards a first world lifestyle, staple crops, medicinal plants and metallurgy are just some of the items listed.&nbsp; This sacred clown, who in our culture is known as a Qusillu, listens to the ancestors, acknowledges that these items were appropriated without permission and agrees to a re-negotiation in acknowledgment of the Western worlds’ spiritual corruption; to allow this Indigenous technology to be appropriated in the interest of healing ancestral wounds, for no other reason would the decimation of these natural gifts be of value. The Plastic Shaman is here engaged and entertained as asking for spiritual permission to proceed. As Western spiritual institutions necessarily lose space and cede spiritual dominion, we are the indigenous remnants of a disastrous, chaotic, and bloody 500 plus years colonization of our Americas. Today we ask the plastic shamans to request permission from our ancestors. Permission to proceed towards healing of themselves and their legacy, which will magnify the positive path chosen going forward. A true ally must understand deeply and not ask to be healed. True plastic shamans must heal themselves. Restorative justice is often left out of the spiritual and ceremonial spheres of human life. The feeling of owing something often leaves people at a loss of how to proceed (and frequently, aggression or poorly thought out claims of absolution are quickly and reflexively brought forward). We ask that the doors to philosophical spiritual union be left open. Only after the new age of the plastic shaman has sufficiently appropriated our ancestral plant medicines and profound healing ceremonies will healing begin to enter the higher echelons of colonial power and peace abound, according to many Indigenous prophecies. Our traditions must necessarily first be capitalized upon. Our elders surely and rightly vilified this second conquest and colonization, harnessing the ancestral medicine power that kept us alive through very dark years, rendering our languages and ceremonies prohibited, repressed and disparaged. It took many lives and many centuries to begin this shift towards cultural appropriation and corporate profits that continue to undermine our traditions, lands, and lifeways. But first is permission, protocol towards the ancestors, must be asked, we cede this hard work to the plastic shaman. Below a list of South American Indigenous gifts to the world: Tomatoes, Potatoes, Peanuts, Avocados, Coca - Cola, Novacaine, Lidocaine (cocaine), Coca Leaf, Rubber, Ayahuasca, Maca, Quinua, Alpacas, Llamas, Vicuña, Guinea Pigs, Gold, Silver, Lithium, Mango, Papaya, Cacao, Cotton. Como artista residente del Museo RISD 2023, llevé a cabo una ceremonia de presentación titulada Plastic Shaman. &nbsp;La performance tenía varios objetivos, a partir de mis carreras combinadas como artista contemporáneo y conservador de museo, comentando sobre museología y desde un punto de vista ancestral. La obra unió textiles andinos y objetos de bronce de la colección del museo que alguna vez estuvieron juntos, ya sea en ceremonia o entierro o ambos. Estos objetos ahora viven vidas separadas en diferentes áreas de las instalaciones de almacenamiento del museo. Traditionally these Aymara reed boats are known as Walsa, but investigations into 15th century Aymara dictionaries written by the Jesuit Monks have it written as “Wampu”. Colaboración artística con Sara Kavage como parte del proyecto artístico Lenapehoking-Watershed, Independence Seaport Museum, Filadelfia, PA. The group approached me to participate with a large scale community weaving project. With a very small budget we went to local businesses and found recycled wood pallets which became the loom and used scrap advertising banners which became the warp and weft. It was very interesting activating a trash loom amongst the people who still live and breathe thousand year weaving traditions deeply ingrained in the cultural identity of the urban Indigenous Aymara people. Architecture in Development Article&nbsp;︎︎︎ Basurama fue un proyecto arquitectónico que buscaba crear un espacio público temporal con sombra en un área urbana no reclamada en El Alto, La Paz en Bolivia. El grupo se acercó a mí para participar en un proyecto de tejido comunitario a gran escala. Con un presupuesto muy pequeño fuimos a negocios locales y encontramos pallets de madera reciclada que se convirtieron en el telar y utilizamos pancartas publicitarias de desecho que se convirtieron en la urdimbre y la trama.
